Their story began in October 1946, when a young man named Stu Rubin returned to his hometown of New Bern, North Carolina, to repair an old, abandoned house he had purchased. Thirty-one-year-old Stu had recently returned home from fighting in World War II. With just his guitar and an old hound dog named Clementine for company, Stu was feeling kind of lonely when 29-year-old Abbey Lunney, his former lover, showed up at his door. Stu and Abbey first met fourteen years ago in New Bern and had a brief summer romance before Abbey moved away with her family. Abbey’s wealthy parents did not think that Stu, a poor lumberyard worker, was a suitable match for her. After finding out that Stu was single, Abbey admitted that she was engaged to a man named Nicolas and would be married in three weeks. Stu invited Abbey to stay for a crab dinner. When they went down to the dock to look in the crab cages, they see the message “Stu loves Abbey” that Stu had carved into the dock fourteen years ago. Later, Abbey's fiancé Nicolas, a lawyer, attempted to call her many times at her hotel, but she ignored him. After visiting an art gallery and rediscovering her love for painting, Abbey met Stu at the river and the two paddled a canoe to a small, peaceful lake filled with geese and swans. It began to rain as they headed back to Stu's house, and they were soaked by the time they reached it. Stu gave Abbey some of his dry clothes to wear, and the two warmed themselves in front of the fire and shared a drink. Stu told Abbey that he still loved her, and the two rekindled their romance with some hot, steamy hand-holding. Next day, they kissed and embraced one more time, and Abbey drove back to the hotel where she was staying. When Abbey arrived in the parking lot, she noticed Nicolas' car parked there. Before going out to meet him, she read the very last letter that Stu wrote to her professing his love and promising to always cherish the memories that they had together. After reading the letter three times, Abbey got out of the car to go speak to Nicolas. It was not revealed what she said to him or which man she ultimately chose to stay with.
